Sudanese Refugee Living in Flagstaff to Participate in London Olympics Rep. Gosar Praises Olympic Committee’s Decision

On Saturday, the International Olympic Committee decided to allow Guor Marial an Olympic runner, Sudanese refugee, and current Flagstaff resident to participate in the London Olympics this month. Prior to this decision, Marial's participation was in jeopardy as he was considered 'stateless'. Marial fled Sudan and chose not to be a part of that country’s team; however, he is also not a U.S. citizen.

Sudanese Refugee Living in Flagstaff to Participate in London Olympics Rep. Gosar Praises Olympic Committee’s Decision

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Willing to Expedite His Ability to Travel

Prescott, AZ – On Saturday, the International Olympic Committee decided to allow Guor Marial an Olympic runner, Sudanese refugee, and current Flagstaff resident to participate in the London Olympics this month. Prior to this decision, Marial's participation was in jeopardy as he was considered 'stateless'.  Marial fled Sudan and chose not to be a part of that country’s team; however, he is also not a U.S. citizen.

In order to participate Marial had to petition the Committee for special status.  That special status included running under the banner of the Olympics itself, instead of representing a particular country. Initially, Marial would have needed to obtain a U.S. travel document and a travel visa from the United Kingdom to argue his case as to why he should be able to run under the Olympic banner. However, because the IOC named Marial an Olympic athlete without needing to hear his case in person, he now simply needs the travel documents in order to go to London to participate.

Congressman Gosar stated, "When I first heard of Marial's predicament, I knew right away we needed to try to help him achieve his Olympic dream.  This past weekend, I was very happy to learn that the International Olympic Committee  will allow him to run in the 2012 London Olympic Games under the Olympic banner.  Today, I am encouraged to hear that the Department of Homeland Security will be expediting his application.  I say this—Run, Marial, Run!"

Knowing the hurdles Marial still must overcome, Congressman Gosar continued, "My office has been following this case closely and making the appropriate calls when necessary.  I will continue to work closely with Mr. Marial to ensure this Olympian's dream is realized. Although there is doubt that he will be able to participate in opening ceremonies, we will continue to strive toward that goal."
