Prescott, AZ- U.S. Congressman Paul A. Gosar (R-AZ) released the following statement today after the national debt surpassed $16 trillion. In three and a half years the United States has added more than $5 trillion in new debt. “As the president continues to take our country down an unsustainable path toward fiscal ruin by spending and borrowing against our nation’s future, today we passed the $16 trillion milestone of debt. This is not only a burden on American families and small businesses, but also a threat to our nation’s future,” said Congressman Gosar. “Day by day families live within their means and companies plan around a budget, yet the federal government continues to spend recklessly, and to destroy America’s responsibility to leave younger generations with the prospect of a better tomorrow. It is time the federal government tightens its purse strings, eliminates wasteful spending and lives within its means just as its citizens do.” Congressman Gosar cosponsored a balanced budget amendment proposal, also known as the “Business Cycle Balanced Budget Amendment” (H.J. Res. 81) to restore common-sense budget solutions and to stop Washington’s spending addiction. Congressman Gosar is committed to restoring fiscal order and prosperity.
