Firefighters Sunday were battling a 100-acre blaze burning twomiles from the Tonto Fish Hatchery in the Big Canyon area of the Tonto National Forest, officials said Sunday. The "Big Canyon Fire" was reported about 10:30 a.m. Sunday about 14 miles east of Payson in a rough and remote area of the forest, according to David Albo, Tonto National Forest spokesman. When this summer’s monsoons hit, officials from the Prescott National Forest worried. In May, the Gladiator Fire, near Crown King, destroyed a good part of the Forest. And the loss of vegetation can cause soil erosion. But Forest officials have been managing the burnt area to keep possible flooding down.
