Rep. Gosar Votes to Protect Unborn Babies
'Legislation that permanently outlaws taxpayer-funded abortion is long overdue’

Today, U.S. Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04) voted in favor of the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (H.R. 7), legislation that would make the Hyde Amendment and other policies that prohibit federal funding of abortion permanent law. The bill passed by a bipartisan vote of 227-188.

After the vote, Rep. Gosar said, “Legislation that permanently outlaws taxpayer-funded abortion is long overdue. Americans across the country worry that, if certain laws aren’t reauthorized every year, their hard-earned money could be used to pay for the execution of unborn babies through abortion. This bill will finally make the temporary laws that prevent taxpayer-funded abortion permanent. I was proud to vote for this life-saving legislation.”

BACKGROUND
H.R. 7 makes the following policies that were previously passed on a case-by-case basis permanent:

1) The Hyde Amendment prohibits the use of certain federal funds to pay for abortions and must be attached every year to the Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations Act in order to remain in effect. Congress has passed legislation with the Hyde Amendment attached every year since 1976.

2) The Smith FEHBP amendment prohibits the use of federal funds to provide health insurance plans that include elective abortion coverage to federal employees.

3) The Dornan amendment prohibits the use of congressionally appropriated funds for abortions in the District of Columbia.

H.R. 7 also makes policies that restrict elective abortion funding through the Peace Corps and federal prisons permanent.
