Today, Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04) released the following statement after participating in a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing titled, “Waste And Inefficiency In The Federal Government: U.S. Government Accountability Office’s (GAO) 2016 Duplication Report” which examined specific recommendations made by GAO that would cut wasteful federal spending and improve efficiencies within the federal government:

“No one has high expectations for federal government employees within the Obama Administration. Having said that, there is no excuse for ignoring commonsense, cost-saving recommendations from the Government Accountability Office. The IRS, VA and Department of Labor have continued to ignore GAO recommendations that would save our country billions. Today, I had the opportunity to press a few of these bureaucrats on their failure to adopt some of these efficiencies.

“The time for big government incompetence is over. It starts with first changing the culture of complacency in Washington and rejecting the failed status quo. Congress must act boldly to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse wherever it can. I take the recommendations of Government Accountability Office to heart and will act on as many as possible.”

Background:

Today, GAO released its sixth annual Duplication Report entitled, “Additional Opportunities to Reduce Fragmentation, Overlap, and Duplication and Achieve Other Financial Benefits.”

GAO estimates, “The progress Congress and executive branch agencies have made as of March 2, 2016, to address the actions [GAO previously] identified will result in approximately $125 billion in financial benefits from 2010 through 2025.”

In this year’s report, GAO identified more than 90 new actions that Congress and the administration could implement to reduce wasteful spending and duplicative programs.

To date, Congress and the Obama Administration have only implemented 41 percent of GAO’s recommendations since 2011.
