Today, U.S. Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04) released the following statement after announcing original cosponsorship of three bills, H.R. 3009, H.R. 3011 and H.R. 2942, respectively aimed at terminating sanctuary cities, establishing mandatory  jail time for illegal aliens that reenter the country and preventing illegal immigrants charged with crimes from being released  into the public:

“The recent murders of innocent American citizens by illegal immigrants are a direct result of the Obama Administration’s failure to uphold our immigration laws. The silence from supporters of dangerous “sanctuary city” policies is deafening as they continue to ignore the fatal consequences of incentivizing increased lawlessness.

“The actions of this administration have violated the first and foremost role of the federal government, to defend our homeland and protect our citizens. President Obama and Secretary Johnson have blood on their hands. How many innocent lives have to be lost before this administration understands the dangers associated with their failed policies? I have pledged my full support to overturning President Obama’s disastrous executive amnesty orders and stand with my fellow colleagues Congressmen Matt Salmon (AZ-05) and Duncan Hunter (CA-50) in demanding legislation that will save American lives and enforce the rule of law.”

Background

Recently, two Americans, Kate Steinle of San Francisco and Grant Ronnebeck of Arizona, were both allegedly murdered by illegal immigrants with criminal records who were released from jail. The three bills cosponsored by Congressman Gosar would prevent the “catch and release” policies currently used for illegal aliens. Summaries of the legislation are included below:

H.R. 3009 – Take Action Against Sanctuary Cities – denies federal funding for the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program and the Community Oriented Policing Services Grant Program to state and municipalities with “sanctuary city” policies that conflict with federal immigration law.

H.R. 3011 – the Establishing Mandatory Minimums for Illegal Reentry Act – sets the amount of jail time to no less than five years for any adult illegal alien who attempts to return to the United States illegally after previously being deported.

H.R. 2942 – the Stop Catch and Release Act – prevents illegal immigrants with pending criminal charges from being released back into our communities.
