Today, U.S. Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04) released the following statement after President Obama authorized continued airstrikes against ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) military forces in Iraq:

"The American people have a decreased desire for conflict as a result of lengthy and costly operations in the Middle East. But without these targeted airstrikes against ISIS, these savages will continue their horrendous and despicable acts against the Iraqi people which include rape and mass genocide.

"Additionally, these strikes are necessary to protect U.S troops and facilities in the region. Our nation has spilled blood and treasure over the years to liberate the Iraqi people from oppression. It would be an insult to our soldiers and the Iraqi people alike if the U.S. stood by and did nothing and let this terrorist organization rule the region as they see fit. 

"Let me be clear: the President's haphazard withdrawal from the region; in addition to his misguided, inconsistent and hypocritical foreign policy, has directly contributed to the situation we face today in Iraq. The region is becoming less stable by the day and ISIS poses a direct threat to our nation. The United States cannot and should not be responsible for solving all of the world's problems, but when we can act prudently and responsibly to save lives and further the global mission of undermining terrorism, we have an obligation to do so. 

"For my part, I have consistently fought to reassure the American people that no tax dollars will go in any way, shape or form to support these groups--the most recent example being H.AMDT.944 to the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2015, which passed on a bipartisan vote.  

"Ultimately, my thoughts and prayers are with our soldiers and with the oppressed Iraqi people. My hope is that the Obama Administration works with Congress to construct a coherent foreign policy strategy to undermine ISIS, al Qaeda and other terrorist networks."
