(AZ-04) released the following statement after his amendment to increase funds for the Army National Guard Operation and Maintenance Account was successfully attached to the Department of Defense and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2016:
Today, U.S. Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04) released the following statement after his amendment to increase funds for the Army National Guard Operation and Maintenance Account was successfully attached to the Department of Defense and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2016:
“The Southwest border, including my home state of Arizona, is a main thoroughfare for black market trafficking. Guns, money, drugs and people are smuggled over the border at an alarming rate. Once smugglers successfully trek a few miles north of the border, they can make easier runs to Phoenix, Los Angeles and beyond. It should come as no surprise then that border security is among the highest priorities for my constituents and the people of Arizona who experience firsthand the violence and ramifications associated with the federal government’s failure to adequately protect this nation and enforce the rule of law.
“Until the federal government decides to fully enforce the laws of this land and secure our border, I will continue to redirect funds towards worthwhile immigration enforcement and border security programs. I am pleased to see that the majority of my colleagues in the House agree that funding for Army National Guard’s Southwest border mission should be a priority by joining me in passage of this commonsense amendment.”

Congressman Gosar’s amendment redirects funds to support the Army National Guard’s Southwest border mission. Specifically, the amendment increases funding for the Army National Guard Operation and Maintenance account by $2 million, offset by cuts to another account.
Under the mission, National Guard members assist with border security and counter-narcotic missions along the Southwest border. More than 300 members of our National Guard actively participate in this important program.
