Congressman Gosar Calls for Tougher Sanctions Against Syria

(August 8, 2011)– Congressman Paul Gosar (AZ-01) has joined other U.S. Representatives in asking President Obama to impose more stringent sanctions on Syria.  In a letter signed by Gosar and his colleagues in the House, the group urges the President to implement specific provisions of the Syria Accountability and Lebanese Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2003, including banning any U.S. business from continuing to do business in Syria and blocking property transactions involving Syria.

Gosar said, “The Syrian regime has clearly lost legitimacy.  Using tanks and weaponry against your own people to stifle dissent cannot be tolerated.  We have to take whatever actions we can to put pressure on the regime to either change or be changed.  Additional sanctions will help accomplish this and it is my hope that the President agrees.”

In addition to the measures outlined in the letter to President Obama, Gosar is also calling for sanctions against any country that provides military goods and materials to the Syrian regime.  “We must make it clear to other nations that there is a price for supporting tyranny and that the United States will oppose any actions that help perpetuate the current Syrian leadership,” Gosar said.

Gosar notes that more than 90 U.S. Senators also sent a letter to President Obama stating that his policies toward Iran and Syria are not working. "I join the overwhelming majority of the U.S. Senate in urging the President to reevaluate and readdress his Middle-Eastern policies."
