Minerals are Critical!
This week, I joined several Arizona mining industry leaders and participated in a mining industry roundtable and toured the Pinto Valley Mine in Gila County. Did you know that there are 35 minerals deemed critical by the United States Geological Survey? Critical minerals are metals and non-metals that are vital to the economic well-being of our country and our way of life. Almost every modern convenience is dependent upon these minerals. Items like solar panels, wind power turbines, electric vehicles, drones, fighter jets, combat equipment, batteries and lighting all require critical minerals.
Yet global challenges, including scarcity, sourcing, production and the threat posed by international monopolies put their supply at risk. Over decades, our nation has not kept pace with foreign mineral producers, forcing the United States to rely on others for many of our key mineral needs.
We must find ways to improve our ability to develop minerals domestically. We know we need these minerals, and we know they should be sourced in America. We also know how to mine in the United States, we have the best workforce and the strongest environmental protections.
I’ve started a new series of videos called Mineral Mondays to discuss the importance of these critical minerals and highlight why every American should have a clear understanding of what minerals we use and why we need them.
