FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 13, 2011 CONTACT: Hananh Loy 202-225-2315 Congressman Gosar fights for education reform as the Empowering Parents Through Quality Charter Schools Act passes House Today, Congressman Gosar and his colleagues in the House of Representatives took an important step towards education reform, and approved H.R. 2218 on a bipartisan basis, with 365 members of Congress voting in support. H.R. 2218 broadens the opportunities for students from all walks of life to attend high quality charter schools, with high levels of accountability to students, parents, and the community as a whole. This important legislation encourages removal of charter school caps in the states across the nation that allow charter schools, while facilitating the expansion of charter school organizations that have shown excellent educational improvement for the students they serve. The legislation also encourages best practice sharing between successful charter schools and public schools, so that every child can reap the benefits of innovative solutions to our education challenges. “I am pleased to see the House of Representatives endorse this important legislation, which will encourage every school district and state to seek out what works when it comes to education. I have long believed that school districts must think outside the box in order to close the achievement gap, and make sure to meaningfully engage parents in their children’s education. H.R. 2218 is an important step in that direction and I encourage my colleagues in the U.S. Senate to approve this legislation quickly. I have consistently supported school choice and innovation. That is why I proposed, and the House passed, my amendment allowing new charter schools on Indian reservations.” said Gosar. Nearly one fourth of Arizona’s public school students attend a charter school. H.R. 2218 is an important step to ensure that every charter school in Arizona and across the country is accountable to the community it serves. H.R. 2218 represents the first portion of reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Act of 1965, last authorized in 2001 and due for reauthorization since 2007.
