WASHINGTON D.C. - Here's what's happening...

Impeachment Trial: This week, and for the second time, the Senate acquitted former President Trump, finding him innocent of the trumped-up charge brought against him earlier this year by angry, liberal Democrats in the House of Representatives. I strongly opposed this impeachment trial and voted against the ridiculous charge. The precedent that was set this week is deeply troubling and the optics for the rule of law are horrible. President Trump did not violate his oath of office and always acted to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Furthermore, impeaching a President after he or she has left office is unconstitutional. The entire impeachment process was divisive, absurd, and illegal. Mr. Biden continues to say he wants unity, but actions speak louder than words. It is my sincere hope that Congress and the Administration turn its focus to the struggles currently facing the nation, including fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and strengthening our fragile economy.

Arizona Turns 109 Years Old: Did you know that on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, Arizona turns 109 years old? It’s true! The Grand Canyon state achieved its statehood on February 14, 1912. On this date 109 years ago, President Taft signed the Arizona Statehood Act, making our great state the 48th to enter the continental U.S. after spending 49 years as a U.S. territory. Arizona only had 200,000 residents at the time of statehood. Copper was discovered in 1854, and copper mining remained as Arizona’s premier industry until the 1950s. After World War II, the widespread availability of refrigeration and air conditioning gave rise to Arizona’s population boom, causing Phoenix to become one of the fastest growing cities in America. Today more than 7 million people call Arizona home. Happy Arizona Statehood Day!

Gosar Introduces Two Amendments To Combat Democrats Frivolous COVID Spending: Democrats continue rushing a partisan, COVID-19 relief bill. Last week, the House Oversight and Reform Committee, which I serve on, considered portions of this nearly $2 trillion pandemic package, including provisions that would bail out certain states to the tune of another $350 billion. I am strongly opposed to allocating more money to states who stymied their economy by continuing to keep their states locked down. These lockdowns are unnecessary and have reduced state and local revenues. Instead of bailing out liberal states, it’s time for these states to open back up. Unfortunately, Democrats have hijacked the COVID-19 relief bill in order to give special treatment to liberal states and allocate spending for many things completed unrelated to COVID-19 relief. For these reasons, I introduced an amendment that ensures any misuse of COVID funds (such as paying down state pension funds) is punishable by 20 years in prison and a hefty fine, and another amendment that eliminates special treatment for Washington D.C. by requiring it comply with the same rules are everyone else.

GOP Doc Caucus Letter to Biden:
Last week, the nation’s top health agency, the Center for Disease Control (CDC), announced what we all have known the be true: there is strong evidence that in-person classroom are safe and schools across our nation should reopen. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was thought best that in-classroom schools be closed for the safety of our students and teachers. Unfortunately, many schools remain closed today, despite CDC guidelines advising otherwise. Our students are missing out on key socialization, education, and nutritional health services that open schools provide. One tragic side-effect resulting from these closures has been an increase in mental health emergency visit. When it comes to reopening schools, Mr. Biden and Democrats profess to be following science. But here are the facts. In January, the CDC recommended sending children back to school, and Mr. Biden’s top COVID-19 advisor, Dr. Anthony Fauci echoed these calls. The CDC has even said it is safe for teachers to return to the classroom even while vaccinations are ongoing. To aid this transition back to schools, Congress allocated $82 billion in December. Clearly, both the science and resources are present to revamp our educational system, therefore this week myself and my fellow members of the Doctors Caucus penned a letter to President Biden, urging him to follow the science and to work with governors to return our children to school in a safe and reasonable way.

A Bad Deal is a Bad Deal: This week, Iran made headlines again over its continued pursuit of nuclear weapons. It was uncovered that Iran is producing uranium metal, which is critical for the development of nuclear weapons. The Iranian regime will stop at nothing to create nuclear weapons. For many reasons, the Iran Nuclear Deal was a terrible agreement and I am grateful that President Trump withdrew from it. Specifically, the agreement sunsets in 2030. Thereafter, Iran will be able to create weapons without any repercussions. It also does not allow the International Atomic Energy Agency the ability to conduct random inspections in Iran, allowing the terrorist nation time to hide all nuclear developments from the world. This week’s news reaffirms my position that the Iran nuclear deal is dangerous for America and the world, and therefore this week, myself and my Republican colleagues sent a letter to President Biden imploring him to not rejoin the Iran Nuclear Deal.

Protecting Your Second Amendment Rights: Joe Biden is carrying a full-out assault on your constitutional right to bear arms – and I don’t support him. Specifically, Mr. Biden wants to limit the number of guns you can own and is threatening to hold gun manufacturers liable for crimes committed using guns. I am convinced Biden’s ultimate goal is to ban citizens from owning firearms altogether.
As a gun owner myself, I believe Arizonans and all Americans have a right to protect themselves. That right is being threatened like never before.
I recently fought to prevent the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms from banning pistol braces. I am also an original co-sponsor of legislation that allows citizens the right to carry a firearm on Army Corps of Engineer properties. These are just some of the recent actions I have taken, and you can be assured that I will continue to fight to protect your Second Amendment rights.
